Apple Tip of the Day

To keep your Apples from browning you can sprinkle lemon juice on them. Now we are talking about the fruit apples here. Not the computer or iPod type Apples. If you are having a problem with your computer type Apples browning then you have serious issues. I seriously doubt that lemon juice will help. Actually it will probably not help, but its citric acid could help get sticky stuff off the case.

I used to use "a bowl of salt water" to replace lemon juice. A little bit salty though.

For the computer type Apple, could we use vinegar?

The chemistry behind this tip? Apples oxidize, becoming more basic. So, to reverse the effect, add an acid. Therefore, orange juice will also work if you don't have any lemon juice handy.
Lemon juice, also used to add blond streaks to hair, while reducing dandruff. (Dandruff can be caused by a loss of acidity in the scalp, which likes to be on the slightly acidic side. It's what they mean when they say a shampoo is pH balanced)

I always wondered about that pH balanced comment.

Which I guess is also why shampoo burns when it gets in your eyes. Hmm. Now, I always thought SOAP was more alkaline than acid? Maybe I'm wrong

No, Jay, you're not wrong. Soaps are water-soluble sodium or potassium salts of fatty acids. Soaps are made from fats and oils, or their fatty acids, by treating them chemically with a strong alkali.(Their pH will usually be less than 10)
Shampoo, on the other hand, has a pH somewhere around 4.5, which is acidic.
