Food Tip of the Day

You're starving. You're in a third-world country. You're at the airport and you see a sandwich vendor. You buy one of his delectable sandwiches and are very excited to eat it, when you realize he hands you a sandwich that's been sitting out, unrefrigerated. Do you eat it anyway? If you're feeling lucky. My eating of such a sandwich resulted in about 36 hours of stomach discomfort, thankfully AFTER I returned home. Still, in general, you never what strains of salmonella, typhoid or syphilis you can get from such a sandwich. When in doubt, throw it out.

Now we should point out that you weren't starving. There are actually people in 3rd world countries starving. You were merely hungry.

I have an issue with the "when in doubt throw it out" link...it says not to rely on sight...ok, smell..ok, or taste...um, not ok. If you were in doubt from sight or smell, why did you taste?

Re: the starving comment. You're right. I wasn't starving, but I couldn't resist that photo of "starvin marvin" to illustrate my point. Kris, I agree...if food looks or smells bad, it is bad. But, I think what they are trying to say is, it may go bad before it shows visibly, or smells olfactorally,

BTW, my favorite photo, I think, is the one of the sandwich vendor. Hey, shady!

One other thing regarding the sandwich vendor. Be glad you don't want the sandwich on the guy's CROTCH! I mean SERIOUSLY! What kind of sicko is this?
